Mr. Elliott served as a physicist for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration for over 40 years. During his meritorious career, he is a distinguished recipient of the the highest U.S. civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, for duties as the lead Retrofire Officer at NASA Mission Control Center during the aborted Apollo 13 space mission with safe return of the flight crew. He was also instrumental in the first landing of mankind on the moon, July 20, 1969.

Citation: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk
of his life above and beyond the call of duty during engagements of Vera
Cruz on 21 and 22 April 1914. Surgeon Elliott was eminent in the efficient
establishment and operation of the base hospital, and in his cool judgment
and courage in supervising first-aid stations of the firing line and removing
the wounded. By his inspiring valor, steadfast perseverance, and selfless
dedication to duty, Surgeon Elliott reflected great credit upon himself
and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

My gg-grandfather, "Old Man Elliott", had the distinction
of becoming the first casualty of the Meeker Massacre in Colorado. His
death, after fighting the Ute Indians so that the rest of the family could
escape, was recounted in papers throughout the state and he has become
a legend in the family for being one of the original settlers in the area.
